Laughing Buddha carries a cloth sack which, according to various interpretations, carries candy for children, gold, rice plants, blessings of Buddha — health, happiness and prosperity, or the woes of the world. Others say his bag simply carries a few personal possessions signifying he was poor but content.
Sometimes he is also called the Laughing Buddha of Safe Travel on a journey spreading joy and happiness. Rubbing the big belly of Laughing Buddha, symbolizing abundance and mirth, is said to bring good luck. His elongated earlobes signify wisdom. He carries what is said to be a 'wish-giving' fan which is the kind aristocracy used long ago to signify the wish of a vassal would be granted.
Some believe Laughing Buddha is modelled on a roving Zen monk who lived during the 10th century called Pu-tai. Because of this monk's benevolent nature, he came to be regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva who will be Maitreya (the Future Buddha).
The Laughing Buddha's image graces many temples, restaurants, and amulets, as he has become a deity of contentment and abundance.
